Dean and other FLASS staff join a day trip to Huawei Campuses in Shenzhen and Dongguan
Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS, and Professor Philip Yu Leung-ho, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, and other colleagues from the University joined a day trip to Huawei’s Campuses in Shenzhen and Dongguan on 28 July, 2023. They were updated by Huawei, one of the global leaders in technology, about the latest technological discoveries related to information and communications technology, educational technology, and other research.
In Huawei’s Shenzhen Campus, EdUHK staff visited Huawei’s Smart Campus and Digital Transformation Exhibition Hall to learn about the technology giant’s latest technologies and practices about Learning and Teaching, Research High-Performance Computing (HPC), AI Computing, and Green Campus. Huawei also arranged a tour for our staff around its Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Academy in Shenzhen.
After the visit to the Shenzhen Campus, EdUHK staff went to visit the Library and the Sport and Health Laboratory in Huawei’s Dongguan campus. Built on the southern shore of Songshan Lake in Dongguan, the Dongguan campus is a European-themed village modelled on famous European historical architecture and modern infrastructure. In the relaxing spaces created by the village’s greenery and architecture, thousands of researchers from Huawei work arduously on discovering and developing new applications and technologies to meet the latest market trends and customers’ needs.
Apart from staff from FLASS, staff members from the Centre for Learning, Teaching, and Technology (LTTC), the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), Global Affairs Office (GAO), the School Partnership and Field Experience Office (SPFEO) and Office of the President also participated in the visit. A total of 13 staff members took part in the tour.
In May 2023, EdUHK and Huawei Hong Kong signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly establish the ICT Academy, which will help nurture talents in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Under the collaboration framework, the two partner institutions will promote smart teaching through the employment of IT infrastructure, apply ICT technology in learning, teaching and management, and explore innovative applications of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in education.
According to the MOU, certified training programmes will also be provided for EdUHK staff and students to foster holistic development. Also, the establishment of ePortfolios will help create a talent pool and an integrative platform for educators, supporting the wider use of education technology, as well as laying a foundation for cultivating talent in the ICT industry.
